Embarking on a desert trek is about more than just covering distance—it’s about immersing yourself in the rhythm of the Sahara, experiencing its vast stillness, and connecting with the land and its people. At Wild Morocco, we offer more than just a guided hike; we provide an authentic, off-grid adventure led by local experts who have spent their lives navigating these remote landscapes.

Unlike mass tourism trips, our hikes are designed for small groups, ensuring a more personal experience. Travelling with a handful of like-minded adventurers allows for a deeper connection to nature and the ability to fully embrace the solitude and silence of the desert. You won’t find crowded campsites or rushed itineraries—just a slow and mindful journey through one of the world’s most breathtaking environments.

A desert trek is more than just a physical journey—it’s an opportunity to step into a world of silence, vastness, and timeless beauty. The Sahara is a place of contrasts, where golden dunes stretch endlessly beneath blue skies, and where nights are illuminated by an infinite canopy of stars. On a Wild Morocco hiking trip, you’ll experience the desert in its purest form, free from crowds and distractions.
Each evening, we set up camp in secluded locations chosen for their natural beauty and shelter—whether among the dunes, beside a hidden oasis, or near a cluster of desert trees. As the sun sets, the temperature cools, and the desert transforms into a peaceful retreat, perfect for relaxation and reflection.
Gather around the campfire, where our Sahrawi guides prepare fresh meals using local ingredients. Enjoy traditional tagines, warm bread baked in the sand, and soothing mint tea, all while sharing stories under the night sky. With no artificial light pollution, the Milky Way is visible in all its brilliance, making every night an unforgettable experience.

A trek with Wild Morocco is not just about the landscape—it’s about the people who call it home. Our Sahrawi guides are proud to share their deep connection to the desert, passing down stories, traditions, and survival skills that have been part of their heritage for generations.

The cheapest way to reach the start of the hike (the village of Mhamid) is by public bus from Marrakech (this service starts from Casablanca). This is a 10 hours journey from Marrakech, crossing the Atlas Mountains and driving along the Draa Valley oases.
The bus operator that travels directly to Mhamid is CTM with one daily departure late morning from Marrakech (mid-afternoon from Ouarzazate). Their website is ctm.ma and your destination is ‘Lamhamid Ghizlane’. CTM, and operator Supratours, also offer a route to Zagora if the Mhamid timetable isn’t suitable.
You will need to buy tickets in advance online.
CTM has a dedicated terminus in Marrakech and Ouarzazate (‘la gare CTM’ if you ask a taxi driver to take you there).
The alternative would be to rent a small car to self-drive and break up the journey to Mhamid with an overnight stop en-route (e.g. at/near Ouarzazate, 4 hours from Marrakech, or at Agdz, 5.5 hours from Marrakech).
A private 4×4 vehicle transfer with driver from Marrakech to Mhamid is costly. The direct car transfer takes approx. 8 hours, excluding any time for stops and visits en-route (i.e. make the short detour to visit the Ait Ben Haddou UNESCO Site near Ouarzazate).
You may consider taking the bus down to Mhamid one-way and arrange a private 4×4 vehicle transfer out of the desert back to Marrakech – this works with either of the linear trekking routes to the Erg Chigaga Great Dunes (3 nights or 4 nights). The driver will collect you at the dunes and take you out of the desert via Lake Iriqui and Foum Zguid (3 hours off-road travel) and then 6 hours via the tar road and back across the Atlas mountains.
There are direct flights with Ryanair to Ouarzazate airport (approx. 4 hours from Mhamid by taxi). You can fly directly with this carrier from London, Paris, Barcelona. Or connect through Paris for other carriers to Ouarzazate.
For domestic options we recommend travelling by the public bus (please see above).
We provide the essentials for the wilderness camps, and as far as possible we aim to emulate a nomadic journey. The camps are not pre-established, rather, the camel caravan carries all of the camping equipment, food and water from point to point. Camp is established each evening in the seclusion of small dunes and/or trees.
We use lightweight mobile dome tents, sleeping mats and heavy blankets. There is a dining tent in colder weather. We sit at ground level on blankets and cushions.
Water is a very precious resource in the desert. We don’t carry enough water with the camels to allow for showering/washing every day. We are able to provide water for hand and face washing in the evening once camp is established. Please ask your guide.
We suggest you bring dry soap (hand gel), a face/hand towel, and please ensure to bag your litter to hand to your guide.
If you plan to camp at the Erg Chigaga dunes on your final night of the desert hiking, please enquire with us on the possibility to camp at our fixed camp at the dunes (Camp Al Koutban), which has hot showers. Please note, camping on the final night at the Erg Chigaga dunes is at additional rate, per the itinerary.
Step into the vast, untouched beauty of Morocco’s Sahara Desert with an unforgettable guided trek. Whether you choose the Erg Chigaga dunes or the Iriqui National Park expedition, you’ll experience slow travel, cultural immersion, and breathtaking landscapes far from the crowds. With expert Sahrawi guides, nights under the stars, and the rhythm of the desert setting the pace, this is more than just a hike—it’s a journey into the heart of the Sahara.
