Travelling to the Sahara desert is an adventure and the scenery en-route is incredible – the geology of the Anti-Atlas mountains and Draa Valley is other-worldly! However the journey time is considerable and not everyone has the luxury of being able to break up the driving distance with overnight rest stops (which is what we advise wherever possible).
One quick way of reaching the far south of Morocco is to take a morning flight from Casablanca to Zagora (which also allows for a short internal flight to Casablanca from Marrakech early morning) and arriving late morning to Zagora. From Zagora, you can be in the heart of the dunes at Erg Chigaga in time for lunch!
As the flights southbound and northbound only operate on a Monday and Thursday it makes for a sensible option to take 2 nights at camp at Erg Chigaga (Monday and Tuesday) and 1 night at Zagora (Wednesday) having made the full circuit through the desert east to west and driving to Zagora via Foum Zguid. The departing flight to Casablanca leaves mid-morning.
Flights are operated by Morocco’s carrier Royal Air Maroc and the timetables change according to daylight saving hours (i.e one hour earlier during Winter). Flights can be purchased online. We can arrange for a driver-guide and 4×4 to collect you at Zagora airport and drop you back there three days later. We also make accommodation arrangements in the desert and at Zagora.
