This was a true five-star experience from beginning to end. Khalid was an incredible guide, driver and host, and by the end of the journey he genuinely felt like a friend. The three-day 4×4 tour through the Atlas Mountains, desert landscapes and traditional towns was exactly the kind of adventure we were hoping for. Our four-day private tour from Marrakech to the desert felt less like a tour and more like travelling with a local friend. Summary

This private Morocco desert tour combines mountain scenery, oasis valleys, dramatic gorges and remote Sahara landscapes in a well-paced five-day itinerary. Travelling in a private Toyota Land Cruiser with an English-speaking driver, you cross the High Atlas Mountains before exploring the Dades Valley and Todra Gorge. The route then crosses the volcanic Jebel Saghro mountains to follow the palm-lined Draa Valley to Agdz before continuing south-west towards the great dunes of Erg Chigaga.

A highlight is the extended off-road journey through Iriqui National Park, where wide-open desert scenery replaces towns and roads. At Erg Chigaga, you can enjoy a camel trek, climb the dunes for sunset and spend the night in a desert camp. Standard and luxury desert camp options are available. Itinerary

Day 1
Meet in Marrakech at 09:00 and begin crossing the High Atlas Mountains via the Tichka Pass at 2,260 metres. Pass traditional adobe villages and green valleys before reaching Ouarzazate, and then the Dades region. Follow the Dades river through striking rock formations and ruined kasbahs to the dramatic Dades Gorge. Overnight in a traditional guest-house in the Dades Valley.

Day 2
Travel from the Dades Valley to the Draa Valley, stopping at Todra Gorge where you can stretch your legs beneath towering canyon walls. Continue across the volcanic landscapes of Jebel Saghro in the Anti-Atlas before joining the Draa River. Arrive in Agdz and stay among the palm groves in a traditional guest-house.

Day 3
Leave Agdz and travel south via Tamegroute and Mhamid El Ghizlane. After lunch, leave the tarmac behind and begin the desert approach to Erg Chigaga. Arrive during late afternoon and spend time exploring the dunes, camel trekking or relaxing. Watch sunset from a high dune before dinner, campfire music and an overnight desert camp stay.

Day 4
Rise early for sunrise over the dunes before breakfast. Depart camp and travel north-west across remote desert landscapes, passing Lake Iriqui’s vast dried salt flats and the ridges of Jebel Bani. Continue through Foum Zguid and Tazenakht before reaching Ait Ben Haddou in the Ounila Valley. Overnight in a restored kasbah guest-house near the UNESCO site.

Day 5
After breakfast, follow the scenic Ounila Valley road and visit the area around Telouet Kasbah. Re-cross the High Atlas Mountains via the Tichka Pass and descend towards Marrakech. Enjoy final mountain views before arriving back in Marrakech during the mid-afternoon, marking the end of your five-day private Morocco adventure.

This tour operates on a private departure basis for couples, families and groups of friends. What vehicle is used on this tour?

Travel is by private Toyota Land Cruiser 4x4 with an English-speaking driver. This vehicle is well suited to both mountain roads and the off-road sections through Iriqui National Park. The private format means only your booking party travels together, providing flexibility for comfort stops and sightseeing.

How much luggage can I bring?

Standard holiday luggage is generally suitable for this itinerary. Soft-sided bags can be easier to handle than very large hard cases, particularly during accommodation changes. If you are travelling with unusually large luggage, specialist equipment or multiple bags per person, please advise in advance.

Are meals included and can dietary needs be accommodated?

Most meals are included, apart from lunches on the travel days. Breakfasts and evening meals are provided at the guest-houses and desert camp. Please advise us of any dietary restrictions, allergies or special requirements before departure so arrangements can be made wherever possible.

What facilities are available at the desert camp?

Spend one night at Erg Chigaga dunes. You can choose between a standard desert camp located near the region’s tallest dune, or a luxury camp with private bathrooms. Drinking water and hot drinks are provided, while campfire music and traditional hospitality form part of the evening experience.

What weather should I expect?

Conditions vary by season and altitude. Days are often mild to warm, while evenings and early mornings in the desert can feel considerably cooler. September to May is generally the preferred period for this itinerary. Winter travellers should bring warm layers, particularly for desert nights.

Is this tour suitable for all mobility levels?

The itinerary includes optional walking opportunities, including at Todra Gorge and Erg Chigaga. Reaching the summit of the highest dunes involves walking on deep sand. Alternative sunset viewpoints may be arranged. If you do not wish to participate in the camel trek, please advise in advance.
