Tour Details

SummaryShim

This private four-day route connects Morocco’s Atlantic coast with Marrakech via some of the country’s most remote desert scenery. Beginning in Essaouira, Taghazout or Agadir, you travel south and east through the Argan region, Taroudant and the Anti-Atlas to reach Foum Zguid, the gateway to the desert. From there, your private Toyota Land Cruiser takes you off-road into Iriqui National Park and the vast Erg Chigaga dunes, located around 60 kilometres from the nearest road.

You spend a night at a desert camp, with a choice between a standard camp in an excellent dune setting or a luxury camp with private bathrooms. The journey continues through Mhamid, Zagora and the Draa Valley before crossing mountain landscapes towards Marrakech. Expect a medium-to-heavy driving pace, especially on Days 1 and 4. This tour suits couples, families and friends seeking a private departure between September and May.

ItineraryShim

Day 1 – Sahara frontier
Depart from Essaouira at 08:00 or Taghazout/Agadir at 09:00 and travel towards Foum Zguid. The route passes through the Argan biosphere, follows the coast near Agadir, continues across the Souss plain and climbs gradually into the Anti-Atlas. Pass Taroudant and Tazenakht before reaching a comfortable hotel outside Foum Zguid for the night.

Day 2 – Erg Chigaga
Today is dedicated to the desert. Travel off-road from the end of the tarmac route through acacia groves, fossil beds and the dry Lake Iriqui before reaching Erg Chigaga in time for lunch. Relax at camp, enjoy a camel trek to the tallest dune, watch sunset, then spend the evening around the fire beneath star-filled skies.

Day 3 – Draa Valley
Leave Erg Chigaga and travel across desert terrain towards Mhamid El Ghizlane, where you rejoin the paved road. Continue through Tamegroute and Zagora while following Morocco’s longest river course, the Draa. Palm groves, villages and old kasbahs line the valley. Overnight at a charming guest-house near the oasis of Agdz.

Day 4 – Marrakech
Travel from Agdz towards Marrakech. Cross striking Anti-Atlas landscapes before descending to Ouarzazate and continuing to Ait Ben Haddou, where an optional visit can be arranged. Follow the Ounila Valley to Telouet, with another optional kasbah visit, then cross the High Atlas Mountains. Arrive in Marrakech during the late afternoon.
